Chandigarh, Feb 27 (NationPress) Haryana's Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Friday dismissed the Opposition's claims of a Rs 5,000-crore scam in paddy procurement during the Assembly session. He stated that the Opposition, lacking substantial issues to discuss, is attempting to mislead the assembly with unverified assertions through a calling attention motion.

In response to allegations made by member Ashok Arora, the Chief Minister emphasized that serious claims must be backed by credible evidence.

He challenged the Opposition to present any proof to the House rather than relying on baseless accusations.

The Chief Minister clarified that the paddy procurement process in Haryana is conducted strictly following Government of India guidelines, utilizing authorized agencies and a comprehensive, multi-tiered monitoring system. He labeled the scam allegations as completely unfounded.

He also compared current practices to those of past administrations, highlighting that previous governments often left systemic gaps which resulted in irregularities that negatively impacted farmers.

Under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the “double-engine government” has implemented significant reforms aimed at improving transparency, accountability, and farmer welfare.

Today, farmers have clear insights into their earnings and are guaranteed procurement of their produce at the Minimum Support Price (MSP).

Discussing reforms, the Chief Minister noted that the procurement system has been digitized from the farm level, introducing a digital gate-pass mechanism to bolster transparency.

Previously, farmers could wait months, sometimes up to a year, for payment. The current system, however, ensures timely disbursement.

He further stated that if any instances of fake slips, duplicate entries, or other irregularities are identified, the government responds swiftly and decisively.

Unlike the past, where irregularities often went unaddressed, the current system effectively detects discrepancies and ensures corrective measures.

The Chief Minister pointed out that farmers are unconcerned; it is the Opposition that seems to be anxious. He urged them to clarify what actions they took against irregularities during their time in power.

Additionally, the Chief Minister invited constructive feedback, assuring that the government is receptive to positive suggestions aimed at strengthening the procurement process.

He explained that farmers register their crops on the Meri Fasal Mera Byora portal, which is thoroughly verified to confirm the sown area and accurately assess production. Therefore, allegations regarding an ineffective verification process on the portal are incorrect.

During the Kharif season of 2025-26, state procurement agencies successfully acquired 62 lakh 13,000 metric tons of non-basmati paddy at the MSP from approximately 3 lakh farmers.

Point of View

The recent discourse in the Haryana Assembly reflects ongoing tensions in political accountability. While the Chief Minister defends the integrity of the paddy procurement process, the Opposition's allegations underline the critical need for transparency and robust verification mechanisms in agricultural policies. The situation calls for constructive dialogue to enhance the system's efficiency.
