Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, Feb 27 (NationPress) In a troubling incident that unfolded on Friday, two male students were reportedly assaulted for sitting alongside a girl of a different faith on a bus belonging to Sahyadri College in Chikkamagaluru, Karnataka, as confirmed by police.
The police reported that the confrontation occurred on Friday morning when a Muslim girl and two Hindu boys occupied the same seat while heading to college.
This situation seemingly provoked a group of Muslim students, who confronted Yogesh regarding his choice to sit next to the Muslim girl.
They are accused of attacking Yogesh and seizing his mobile device.
Another student, Jayanth, who attempted to intervene and pacify the altercation, was also allegedly assaulted by students identified as Salid and Rashid.
All individuals involved are enrolled at the same Sahyadri College.
Yogesh and Jayanth had a friendship with the Muslim girl and often sat together during their bus rides.
Infuriated by this, Salid and Rashid purportedly launched an attack on both Yogesh and Jayanth.
As tensions rose, the college administration alerted the Basavanahalli police.
Responding to the call, the Basavanahalli police arrived at the scene, took both the accused and the victims to the police station for questioning.
An investigation into the incident is currently underway.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah issued a stern warning that individuals who take the law into their own hands will face serious consequences, irrespective of their affiliations.
He held senior police officials, including Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police, accountable for the rise in crime and organized illegal activities within their jurisdictions.
In addition, Siddaramaiah adopted a "zero tolerance" stance against moral policing, asserting that such behavior will not be permitted in the state.
Nevertheless, despite numerous measures implemented by the state government, there are ongoing reports of moral policing incidents, which raises alarms about the safety and security of young individuals, especially in the communally-sensitive coastal and hilly regions of Karnataka.
