How Did Hirok Patel from Odisha Get Featured in ‘Mann Ki Baat’ for His Farming Innovation?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bhubaneswar, Feb 22 (NationPress) Farmer Hirok Patel from Odisha has been recognized by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the recent episode of 'Mann Ki Baat' for his innovative approach to farming. He has ingeniously transformed a small plot of land into a highly productive agricultural space by merging contemporary methods with age-old practices, effectively doubling his income and motivating fellow farmers nationwide to adopt innovative resource management techniques.
Originating from a village in the Sundargarh district of Odisha, Patel admits his formal education is limited. "I have not pursued much formal education; I completed only up to matriculation. My parents engaged in traditional farming on one acre, and I gradually joined them," he shared.
In 2015, Patel began to explore modern agricultural practices, and by 2018, he fully embraced technical farming methods. Constrained by his limited land, he constructed three ponds and created raised beds on them to cultivate climbing crops such as bottle gourd. "With limited land available, I contemplated how to enhance income from less space. The Prime Minister’s encouragement to double farmers' income inspired my innovation using ponds for cultivation," he explained.
Currently, Patel grows vegetables in one pond and fruits like banana, ber (Indian jujube), and guava in other sections. He also practices mixed farming, incorporating mushroom cultivation and effectively managing five to six crop varieties. His monthly earnings typically range from Rs 4 to 5 lakh, contingent on the yield.
Patel credits his father for his inspiration and acknowledges the Prime Minister’s vision for farmers as a significant motivating factor. "I encourage young farmers to dedicate themselves to hard work. Success is achievable only through effort," he stated.
He was unaware of his mention on 'Mann Ki Baat' until the Prime Minister recognized him while he was in Patna. "I was thrilled," he expressed.
Patel has also gained from multiple government initiatives and institutional support, which he attributes as crucial to his farming advancements and overall productivity.
