Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 16 (NationPress) Suspended Trinamool Congress leader and Bharatpur MLA Humayun Kabir expressed his support for the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday after it made the decision to suspend seven Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs) involved in the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in the state.
In an interview with IANS, Kabir, who established the Janata Unnayan Party last year, stated that such measures should have been implemented much sooner.
“I commend the Election Commission for taking action against the AEROs. This should have happened earlier. Government officials associated with SIR activities have been engaging in malpractices for the past two months. Strong measures should have been enforced against these officials,” Kabir remarked.
Earlier today, the ECI announced the suspension of seven AEROs due to allegations of negligence in their duties.
To recall, last August, the ECI had instructed the state government to suspend and file FIRs against two Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) and two AEROs after proven cases of electoral roll preparation misconduct.
The West Bengal Chief Secretary’s office also faced criticism from the ECI for partially complying with the order by suspending the two EROs and AEROs but failing to file FIRs against them.
The Opposition Leader in the state Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, also endorsed the ECI’s actions while addressing reporters earlier in the day.
“Despite the legal provisions governing elections, the Commission had been advising the Chief Secretary until now. This is the first instance where the Election Commission has exercised its authority in the SIR process. Following this, the Election Commission may also choose to file an FIR if necessary,” Adhikari added.
The BJP leader further asserted, “These seven individuals have been suspended for valid reasons. They accepted fraudulent school certificates and PAN cards during the SIR hearings. They have entirely breached the 13 guidelines established by the Election Commission.”
