New Delhi, Feb 14 (NationPress) The Congress high command has designated former MLA Harshvardhan Sapkal as the new President of the Maharashtra Congress Committee (MPCC), succeeding Nana Patole.

In response to the decision, senior Congress figure and former MP Husain Dalwai expressed his approval, describing it as a timely and necessary move while noting that those intimidated by the ED and other agencies have been set aside.

This shift in leadership follows the party's disappointing outcome in the recent state Assembly elections.

In an interview with IANS, Dalwai remarked, "This is an excellent development that a resolution has finally been reached regarding this long-standing issue. I am confident that those who are daunted by the ED and other authorities have been set aside, allowing a genuine leader to assume the role. I applaud this decision."

He further emphasized that leaders who are apprehensive of central agencies cannot effectively lead the party, highlighting the need for a strong and fearless leader like Harshvardhan Sapkal, who embodies Gandhian values, to rejuvenate the Congress in Maharashtra.

"The central leadership has made a wise choice. The Maharashtra Congress is struggling, and we must combat this government," he added.

Sapkal served as an MLA from 2014 to 2019, representing the Buldhana Assembly Constituency in Maharashtra.

In conjunction with the new party chief, the Congress President has also sanctioned the appointment of Vijay Namdevrao Wadettiwar as the leader of the Congress Legislative Party (CLP) in Maharashtra.

The Congress leadership aims to fortify the party’s standing in Maharashtra, particularly after its poor electoral results. With Sapkal’s appointment, the party aspires to rebuild its foundation and more effectively challenge the ruling BJP-Shiv Sena-NCP coalition.
