Hyderabad, Aug 8 (NationPress) A number of low-lying regions in Hyderabad continued to experience flooding on Friday as a result of the heavy rainfall that occurred the previous night.
Residents in Yellareddyguda of the Ameerpet locality and Picket colony in Secunderabad endured a restless night as floodwaters infiltrated their homes.
Several streets in Kukatpally, Madhapur, Gachibowli, and Raidurgam—areas part of the information technology sector—were left submerged.
Emergency response teams from the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) and the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) were actively engaged in efforts to drain the water from the impacted areas. Sanitation personnel were also deployed to clear away debris and silt.
The Mayor of Greater Hyderabad, Gadwal Vijayalaxmi, visited Ambedkar Nagar in Banjara Hills, where an open drain's retaining wall had collapsed. She instructed officials to place warning signs until the wall's reconstruction is finished.
Additionally, a temple's compound wall collapsed in the Puppalaguda area of Manikonda as a consequence of the intense rain. Some neighboring buildings sustained minor damage, but thankfully, there were no injuries.
Floodwaters also entered numerous homes in OU Colony in Shaikhpet. Residents expressed their frustration, stating that they face this issue every rainy season and urged authorities to implement a lasting solution.
Multiple areas throughout the city and its outskirts recorded substantial rainfall on Thursday night, with the highest measurement being 13.38 centimeters at Khajaguda Sports Complex in Gachibowli, followed by 12.03 centimeters in Saroor Nagar and Srinagar Colony, 11.88 cm in Khairatabad, and 11.60 cm in Yusufguda.
In light of the situation, Cyberabad Police have advised the public to refrain from non-essential travel. IT companies were also encouraged to facilitate remote work when feasible, along with early departures.
"The cloudburst last night unleashed over 100 mm of heavy rainfall across various parts of the city, likely leading to road damage and flooding in certain locations. Moderate to heavy showers are projected to persist throughout the day, intensifying by evening and night," stated Cyberabad Police in a social media update.
Furthermore, the city's twin reservoirs, Himayat Sagar and Osman Sagar, experienced significant inflows due to ongoing upstream rainfall.
Authorities opened four gates of Himayat Sagar to release approximately 2,500 cusecs of water downstream, alerting residents living along the riverbanks.
As of Friday morning, the water level in Himayat Sagar was recorded at 1763.10 feet against its Full Reservoir Level of 1763.50 feet, while Osman Sagar stood at 1783.10 feet compared to its Full Reservoir Level of 1790 feet.
Heavy rain also struck several districts in Telangana on Thursday, with the highest rainfall of 15.40 cm documented in Atmakur, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district. Shaligouraram in Nalgonda district saw 14.15 cm, while Serilingampally in Rangareddy district recorded 13.38 cm, and Addagudur in Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district experienced 13.13 cm.
A vehicle was submerged in a stream near Nelapatla in Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district when the driver attempted to cross it during heavy rainfall. Fortunately, all six passengers managed to escape safely, although the car was carried away a considerable distance.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted continued heavy rain in southern Telangana districts over the next four days.
A yellow alert has been issued for Nalgonda, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Nagarkurnool, Wanaparthy, Mahabubnagar, Narayanpet, and Gadwal districts.
The Met Office has forecast light to moderate rain for Hyderabad on Friday.
