Imams of Delhi Waqf Urge Urgent Salary Release, Threaten Protests

New Delhi, Dec 30 (NationPress) The All-India Imam Association on Monday intensified their calls for the release of overdue salaries, warning of protests if their issues continue to be ignored. A group of Imams convened outside the home of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal to advocate for their demands.

In a conversation with IANS, Maulana Mahfooz Rehman stated, “We had come on Thursday and were promised an appointment with Kejriwal on Saturday, but that meeting never happened. This marks our third attempt. Should we be denied a meeting today, we will initiate a dharna (sit-in protest) and will remain until our salaries are disbursed.”

The Imams highlighted two primary concerns -- the delayed salaries and the absence of a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) within the Waqf Board.

“There has been no feedback from Kejriwal or his office. We are not engaging in politics; we have serious issues. Without a CEO, even if funds are allocated, we will not receive our salaries. The immediate appointment of a CEO is essential,” Maulana Mahfooz Rehman added.

Gayyur Hassan, another Maulana, stressed the gravity of the situation. “We have not received payment for the last 17 months. Despite numerous visits and requests, nothing has been resolved. We have now resolved to commence a protest,” he informed IANS.

Mufti Narajul Haq Kasmi, who has been serving as an Imam under the Delhi Waqf Board since 1988, remarked, “If our requests are not addressed promptly, there will be no possibility of resolution once the election notification is issued. Even if funds are released, salaries cannot be distributed without a functioning CEO. The appointment of a CEO is imperative.”

Several Imams indicated that their salary is quite low, only Rs 18,000, which has not been paid for the past 17 months. They expressed that they are facing significant challenges due to the non-payment of salaries.

Previously, the group had met with Delhi Chief Minister Atishi to discuss their issues, but no substantial solutions were proposed.

As tensions escalate, the Imams have made it clear that they are ready to intensify their protests if their demands are not promptly met.
