Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 21 (NationPress) Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Saturday urged for immediate reform of the United Nations, particularly the UN Security Council (UNSC), while advocating for both India and Brazil to secure permanent membership within the Council.
Speaking to the press after extensive discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at New Delhi's Hyderabad House, President Lula emphasized the importance of the G4 coalition—comprising India, Brazil, Germany, and Japan—which collectively promotes reform within the Council and supports each other's bids for permanent seats.
"For over 20 years, Brazil, India, Japan, and Germany have constituted the G4, advocating for a more inclusive UN Security Council. This expansion is imperative, as the UN must possess the authority to address global conflicts. A body that fails to act will struggle to endure," stated the Brazilian leader.
"We will persist in our efforts to ensure that the UN achieves greater representation, with Brazil and India as integral members of the Permanent Security Council. An expanded roster of both permanent and non-permanent members is crucial for legitimizing and enhancing global governance amid numerous challenges," he added.
During his February 18-22 state visit, President Lula also attended the 2nd AI Impact Summit.
"My dear friend Modi, it brings me joy to be here for the sixth time. The relationship between India and Brazil is monumental. We are not only the two largest democracies of the Global South but also a confluence of the world's pharmacy and barn, with one being a digital powerhouse and the other a renewable energy leader. Both our nations are rich in diversity and cultural industry, united in our commitment to multilateralism and peace. Prime Minister Modi’s invitation for this visit and the AI Impact Summit signifies the deep trust and synchrony between us," President Lula remarked.
The discussions on Saturday aimed at reinforcing the India-Brazil Strategic Partnership across various sectors including trade, energy, defense, agriculture, climate action, technology, AI, semiconductors, critical minerals, and cooperation within the Global South.
As per the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), both leaders reaffirmed their aspirations for an inclusive and multipolar world order, expressing strong commitment towards enhancing global efforts against terrorism.
President Lula is accompanied by approximately 14 ministers and a significant delegation of top executives from Brazilian firms.
Prime Minister Modi and President Lula have been in regular communication, with PM Modi's visit to Brasilia in July 2025 marking the first by an Indian Prime Minister in the last 57 years. The leaders also met in Johannesburg during the G20 summit in November 2025.
"A few months back, in July of last year, I had the honor of hosting my friend Modi in Brasilia. That visit was a pivotal moment. We redefined our bilateral cooperation agenda across five key areas: defense and security; food and nutritional security; energy transition and climate change; digital transformation and emerging technologies; and industrial partnerships in strategic fields. Today in Delhi, as we commemorate 20 years of the Brazil-India Strategic Partnership, we are moving from discussion to action," President Lula stated.
On Saturday, a total of 10 agreements were finalized covering areas such as critical minerals, digital cooperation, sharing traditional knowledge, health, MSME, entrepreneurship, and mass communication. Both leaders also committed to elevating bilateral trade to over USD 20 billion over the next five years.
"We have signed multiple agreements that concretely shape our collaboration in these domains. It's noteworthy that India has advanced in cutting-edge fields such as information technology, artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and space exploration. These advancements present numerous opportunities for partnership with Brazil," the Brazilian President stated during a joint media address with PM Modi at the Hyderabad House.
