Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 31 (NationPress) Today, India is set to host the 2nd India-Arab Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (IAFMM) in New Delhi, representing a crucial advancement in enhancing relationships between India and the Arab world.
This pivotal meeting will be co-chaired by India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and will include foreign ministers and senior officials from all 22 member nations of the Arab League, along with the Secretary General of the Arab League.
As stated by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), this meeting occurs nearly a decade after the first India-Arab Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, which took place in 2016 in Bahrain. The MEA highlighted that the 2nd India-Arab FMM aims to build upon existing collaborations, further expanding and deepening this partnership.
The India-Arab Foreign Ministers’ Meeting serves as the foremost institutional mechanism for fostering cooperation between India and the League of Arab States (LAS). This dialogue framework was formalized in March 2002 through a Memorandum of Understanding between India and the Arab League.
Following that, a Memorandum of Cooperation was established in December 2008 during the visit of the then Arab League Secretary General Amre Moussa, which led to the formation of the Arab-India Cooperation Forum. This framework was later revised in 2013 to enhance its organizational structure. Notably, India currently holds observer status in the Arab League.
During the inaugural Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in 2016, both parties identified five key areas for cooperation: economy, energy, education, media, and culture, proposing various initiatives across these sectors. Officials indicated that today's meeting will focus on evaluating progress achieved thus far and finding ways to further bolster collaboration in these critical areas, reflecting the increasing political, economic, and strategic engagement between India and Arab nations.
This marks the first occasion India is hosting the India-Arab Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi, underscoring the importance that New Delhi places on its partnership with the Arab world. The MEA emphasized that all 22 Arab nations will be represented by Foreign Ministers, other Ministers, Ministers of State, and other Senior Officials from the Arab League.
In preparation for today’s ministerial-level discussions, the 4th India-Arab Senior Officials’ Meeting took place on January 30, laying the groundwork for comprehensive discussions and coordination.
Diplomatic observers regard this meeting as a vital platform for revitalizing India-Arab relations amidst evolving regional and global challenges, with a focus on economic collaboration, energy security, and enhancing people-to-people connections.
