Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 29 (NationPress) The arrival of Foreign Ministers from various nations has commenced in New Delhi ahead of the second India–Arab Foreign Ministers' Meeting, scheduled for January 31.
Among the attendees are the Comoros Foreign Minister Mbae Mohamed, State of Palestine Foreign Minister Varsen Aghabekian Shahin, and Sudan's Mohieldin Salim Ahmed Ibrahim.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has expressed that this gathering aims to enhance bilateral collaborations and foster people-to-people connections.
India will host the 2nd India-Arab Foreign Ministers' Meeting (IAFMM) on January 31, focusing on solidifying current partnerships and expanding cooperation, according to the MEA.
The meeting will be co-chaired by India and the UAE, with the participation of foreign ministers from other Arab League member states and the Secretary-General of the Arab League.
Notably, this meeting marks a significant event, occurring after a decade since the first meeting held in 2016 in Bahrain. At that time, five primary areas of cooperation were identified: economy, energy, education, media, and culture, with proposed activities across these sectors, as noted by the MEA.
India holds the status of an observer in the League of Arab States, which comprises 22 member nations.
This meeting is particularly historic as it is the first India-Arab FMM hosted by India in New Delhi, featuring participation from all 22 Arab countries, including foreign ministers, state ministers, and senior officials along with representatives from the Arab League. Preceding the IAFMM is the 4th India-Arab Senior Officials' Meeting set for January 30, 2026, as stated by the MEA.
The India-Arab Foreign Ministers' Meeting serves as the principal institutional framework driving this partnership, which was formalized in March 2002 when India and the League of Arab States (LAS) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to institutionalize their dialogue process.
Additionally, the MEA highlighted that a Memorandum of Cooperation was established for the creation of the Arab-India Cooperation Forum during the visit of former Arab League Secretary-General Amre Moussa to India in December 2008, later revised in 2013 regarding structural organization.
On Wednesday, the MEA confirmed that foreign ministers and senior officials from 20 nations have affirmed their attendance at the India–Arab FMM and the upcoming 4th India–Arab Senior Officials' Meeting (SOM) for 2026.
