During his introductory comments at the gathering with Italy's Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani, Jaishankar highlighted that this marks Tajani's second visit to India this year, signifying the escalating momentum in their bilateral relationship.
"Deputy Prime Minister, it is a true honour to have you and your delegation in India. This is your second trip this year, which demonstrates the growing momentum, and your frequent visits are greatly appreciated. It underscores a strong commitment, fostering a fruitful relationship between us personally, our governments, and the partnership built on democratic values, respect for civilization, culture, heritage, and a mutual pledge towards a stable, secure, and prosperous world," he stated.
"These meetings, whether held in our respective countries or elsewhere, are incredibly beneficial. We maintain ongoing dialogue and continually refresh our agenda. Today, I welcome you and your delegation to India. Your recent productive meeting with the Prime Minister has undoubtedly paved a clear path for the future of our ties," he added.
Jaishankar expressed gratitude to Tajani for the supportive message from the Italian government following the terrorist incident in New Delhi last month. He also reflected on the recent discussions between Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Giorgia Meloni during the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa.
He stated: "I appreciate the message of solidarity from the Italian government regarding the terror incident in New Delhi last month. Additionally, our Prime Ministers announced a joint initiative to combat terrorism financing during their meeting at the G20 in Johannesburg, which was a significant step forward. We regard Italy as one of our closest allies in these efforts, including in the FATF (Financial Action Task Force)."
Jaishankar mentioned plans to discuss topics such as political cooperation, defense, maritime security, space, the Indo-Pacific, West Asia, and the Ukraine conflict in his discussions with Tajani.
"Today, I wish to talk about political cooperation, defense, maritime security, and space, in which you have significant interest, as well as critical technologies, and to explore ways to advance our strategic action plan and enhance people-to-people connections. I would also like to touch upon various regional and global concerns, including developments in the Indo-Pacific region," he noted.
"We share a mutual interest in what you refer to as West Asia or the Middle East. Additionally, I would like to hear your perspective on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the diplomatic efforts surrounding it. We collaborate closely within the United Nations and other platforms, ensuring a fruitful discussion ahead," he concluded.
