New Delhi, May 15 (NationPress) Emphasizing the importance of global collaboration in the fight against terrorism, India expressed its gratitude to Honduras for demonstrating strong solidarity following the tragic terrorist incident in Pahalgam on April 22, which resulted in the deaths of 25 Indians and one Nepali national, along with numerous injuries.
"First, I want to recognize the statement of solidarity from your nation regarding the despicable attack in Pahalgam. We highly appreciate your public stance against terrorism in all its manifestations and your acknowledgment that such acts are utterly intolerable in any civilized society. Your support and solidarity are invaluable as we strive to combat terrorism in our region," stated External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar during the joint inauguration of the Embassy of Honduras with Foreign Minister Eduardo Enrique Reina Garcia in New Delhi on Thursday.
Jaishankar mentioned that the inauguration of the Embassy is more than just a ceremonial occasion; it symbolizes the shared vision and mutual commitment of both nations to enhance bilateral relations, strengthen institutional ties, and broaden cooperation.
“This reflects our collective desire to forge partnerships not only with Honduras but also with the larger region—relationships that go beyond geography and embody the principles of mutual respect, solidarity, and progress," he added.
He also noted that India-Honduras collaboration on the global platform, including within the United Nations, has manifested in several significant ways.
"We cherish the unwavering support from Honduras in various multilateral endeavors. Although the Indian diaspora in Honduras is small, it is vibrant and plays a crucial role in the local economy, serving as a living bridge of friendship. We are encouraged to witness a growing interest in Indian culture in Honduras, particularly in Yoga and traditional wellness practices. The establishment of an Embassy in India will enhance this living bridge," the EAM remarked.
Highlighting economic ties, the EAM stated that they have been steadily growing, supported by trade, investment, and technical cooperation.
"Bilateral trade now exceeds approximately $300 million. We have a diverse trade portfolio that includes pharmaceuticals, textiles, automobiles, and machinery, while we import coffee, wood, and leather from Honduras. This commercial exchange showcases substantial potential in sectors such as agriculture, business, renewable energy, healthcare, IT, and manufacturing," he added.
Recognizing the necessity to bolster business-to-business interactions, the EAM emphasized that Honduras' strategic location and favorable investment climate make it an appealing destination.
“The opening of the Embassy of Honduras in New Delhi will greatly enhance trade promotion, encouraging business leaders to utilize the Embassy as a hub for matchmaking, thereby providing institutional support for more extensive initiatives and engagements," the EAM concluded.
"Having a new Embassy here is a positive development for us. Honduras is a nation where business is flourishing, and they politically support us. They were among the nations that conveyed their strong solidarity regarding the Pahalgam attack," EAM stated.
