New Delhi, Feb 3 (NationPress) The trade agreement between India and the United States is set to significantly enhance and broaden the commercial relationship between these two major global economies, stated Union Revenue Secretary Arvind Shrivastava on Tuesday.

In his remarks, Shrivastava highlighted that this agreement will open up new avenues for labour-intensive and manufacturing sectors in the US market, thereby promoting mutually advantageous collaborations in advanced technology domains.

In a groundbreaking development, the US has decided to lower tariffs on Indian exports to 18 percent from a previous 50 percent, marking a positive shift in the India-US trade dynamics.

The United States stands as the largest export destination for India, contributing roughly 20 percent of total exports. Experts believe that this reduced tariff rate is likely to enhance bilateral trade and help improve India's trade surplus with the US.

During a conference hosted by FICCI on the Union Budget for 2026-27, Secretary of Economic Affairs Anuradha Thakur remarked that a substantial amount of uncertainty has been alleviated following the announcement of the trade agreement.

“In spite of the escalating geopolitical tensions globally, the Indian economy has shown resilience and stability,” she addressed the audience.

Thakur emphasized India's deep integration with the global economy while maintaining robust macroeconomic fundamentals. She credited the government’s prudent fiscal strategies and stable financial systems for underpinning sustainable growth.

Meanwhile, M Nagaraju, Secretary of Financial Services, indicated that the global economic landscape has gained clarity post-trade agreement, describing it as a major “dark cloud” being lifted from the world economy.

Nagaraju encouraged industry leaders to stay optimistic, mentioning that the government has already initiated measures to cushion the impact of previously higher tariffs. With the tariffs now reduced to 18 percent, he expressed that businesses can finally experience a sense of relief and stability.

Point of View

It is clear that the India-US trade deal represents a significant leap forward in economic relations. The strategic partnership between these two nations is crucial, especially in today’s complex global environment. We must remain optimistic about the opportunities this deal presents for both economies, reinforcing the notion that collaborative efforts can yield mutual benefits.
