New Delhi, Nov 29 (NationPress) As part of its ongoing commitment to humanitarian aid, India has successfully conducted Operation Sagar Bandhu, with an Indian Air Force aircraft delivering approximately 12 tonnes of essential supplies to Colombo following the devastating impact of Cyclone Ditwah. This shipment included tents, tarpaulins, blankets, hygiene kits, and ready-to-eat meals.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar shared the update on X, stating, “Operation Sagar Bandhu is in progress. An Indian Air Force C-130 J aircraft has landed in Colombo with around 12 tonnes of humanitarian supplies, including tents, tarpaulins, blankets, hygiene kits, and ready-to-eat meals.”

On the previous day, India had initiated ‘Operation Sagar Bandhu’ to provide swift Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) to Sri Lanka, which has been severely affected by Cyclone Ditwah, resulting in loss of life and widespread devastation.

The Indian High Commission indicated that the aid included 4.5 tonnes of dry food supplies, 2 tonnes of fresh provisions, and other vital relief materials transported by the Indian Naval Ships (INS) Vikrant and INS Udaygiri to support the affected population.

The Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka communicated, “Operation Sagar Bandhu is actively delivering critical HADR assistance to Sri Lanka post-Cyclone Ditwah. We have sent 4.5 tonnes of dry food, 2 tonnes of fresh supplies, and other vital items from INS Vikrant and INS Udaygiri to help families in distress. During these tough times, India stands resolutely with the people of Sri Lanka, reinforcing its steadfast commitment to the Neighbourhood First policy.”

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the families in Sri Lanka mourning their losses due to the cyclone and announced the dispatch of relief materials and HADR support under 'Operation Sagar Bandhu'.

He remarked, “I extend my deepest sympathies to the people of Sri Lanka who are grieving for their loved ones lost to Cyclone Ditwah. I pray for the safety and recovery of all those affected. In solidarity with our maritime neighbor, India has promptly sent relief materials and crucial HADR support through Operation Sagar Bandhu.”

Furthermore, he stated, “We remain prepared to provide additional aid as the situation develops. Guided by India’s Neighbourhood First policy and Vision MAHASAGAR, India continues to support Sri Lanka during this critical time.”
