New Delhi, May 4 (NationPress) The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has marked a significant achievement with the successful execution of the first flight trial of the indigenously developed Stratospheric Airship, equipped with an instrumental payload, reaching an altitude of approximately 17 km.
This event is celebrated as a pivotal development for India’s defence and surveillance capabilities, positioning India among the select few nations globally with such indigenous advancements.
The airship is set to augment India’s earth observation along with Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance capabilities.
In a post on X, the DRDO stated, “DRDO successfully conducts the inaugural flight trial of the Stratospheric Airship with an instrumental payload to an altitude of around 17 kms. This lighter-than-air system will elevate India’s earth observation and Intelligence, Surveillance & Reconnaissance capabilities, establishing the country as one of the few in the world with such indigenous proficiencies.”
The trial took place on Saturday in Madhya Pradesh at the Sheopur trial site, marking a crucial advancement in sophisticated aerial surveillance and earth observation technologies. The airship, developed by the Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, was launched carrying an instrumental payload to an altitude of about 17 km.
The Ministry of Defence has indicated that the data collected from onboard sensors will be utilized in creating high-fidelity simulation models for future high-altitude airship missions. During the 62-minute flight, envelop pressure control and emergency deflation systems were tested for performance evaluation.
The trial team successfully retrieved the system for further assessment. Officials reported that all systems functioned as anticipated.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh extended his congratulations to the DRDO for the triumphant inaugural flight trial of this system.
He emphasized that this system will uniquely bolster India’s earth observation and Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance capabilities, placing India among a select group globally with such indigenous capabilities.
Dr. Samir V. Kamat, Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of the DRDO, congratulated the dedicated DRDO team involved in the design, development, and trial of the system.
He remarked that this prototype flight signifies a milestone towards realizing lighter-than-air high-altitude platform systems capable of prolonged airborne endurance at stratospheric altitudes.
