New Delhi, March 10 (NationPress) Ambassador of Italy to India, Antonio Bartoli, emphasized the pressing necessity to resolve the ongoing conflict in West Asia on Tuesday. He stated that both India and Italy align in their commitment to fostering dialogue aimed at swiftly bringing an end to the war.

In an interview with IANS, Bartoli noted the urgency of concluding the conflict in West Asia to ensure the stability and regularity of energy resources at fair prices.

"Italy and India share the same goals in this conflict, which include advocating for de-escalation, diplomatic dialogue, and peace efforts to halt the war as quickly as possible. Additionally, we are managing the situation of thousands of Italian nationals in the Gulf region and abroad. For instance, around 1,500 tourists were stranded in the Maldives. Our concerns extend beyond the battlefield. Furthermore, it is critical to resolve this conflict promptly to maintain stability in energy prices, as we aim to prevent oil from exceeding $100 per barrel," Bartoli conveyed to IANS.

On Tuesday, oil prices experienced a significant drop, trading below $90 per barrel following remarks from US President Donald Trump, who suggested that the war in the Middle East might conclude soon. Trump also warned Iran against attempting to interrupt global energy supplies through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital oil shipping route.

Bartoli remarked that India is increasingly recognized as a stable and judicious player on the global stage. He referenced a recent phone call between External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, during which they deliberated on the current crisis in West Asia.

"As a nation, India is gaining prominence on the world stage, not only due to its economic and demographic strength but also as a reliable and wise partner in all situations. We perceive India as a trustworthy ally, contributing to integrated value chains and engaging in significant geopolitical discussions. This is evidenced by the recent correspondence between our foreign ministers regarding the Middle Eastern crisis," he stated.

Bartoli pointed out that the conflict in West Asia impacts local markets, consumers, and contributes to rising costs for transportation, insurance, and other products.

"The implications are felt in local markets and by consumers, leading to increased costs for transportation, insurance policies, and other goods. This situation is detrimental to the economy and overall peace. Hence, we are hopeful for a swift resolution to this conflict, allowing trade and economic growth to flourish. We hold a strong belief that the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Europe and India will significantly enhance trade and investment opportunities," Bartoli expressed.

The ongoing conflict in West Asia was triggered by joint US-Israel military actions against Iran on February 28, prompting Iran to retaliate with drone and missile strikes targeting US interests, regional capitals, and allied forces.

Bartoli underscored the privilege of Italy being designated as the partner country for the 40th AAHAR – The International Food and Hospitality Fair. He expressed Italy's eagerness to collaborate with India in the field of food production.

"It’s a significant honor, marking the first instance where such a prestigious fair has a partner country. It is particularly meaningful that this partner country is Italy. This reflects our status as a leading producer with a strong reputation in the food industry. I would like to remind everyone that in December, UNESCO recognized Italian cuisine as part of the world's heritage," he remarked.

"Italian cuisine is a treasure of humanity. Importantly, just like in India, food symbolizes cultural identity, history, and geography. It reflects our regions. Moreover, food production encompasses a comprehensive industry, including machinery, sustainable packaging, and cold chain logistics. Italy is eager to cooperate with India to produce not only for the local market but also for the global market," he added.

The 40th edition of AAHAR – The International Food and Hospitality Fair is being held from March 10-14 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, organized by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) and the India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO). AAHAR is one of the most recognized brands in the food and hospitality sector across Asia.
