Jabalpur Declares District a ‘Water-Scarce Area’ Amid Rising Temperatures
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Jabalpur, April 17 (NationPress) Due to the escalating summer temperatures and increasing reports of water scarcity, the Jabalpur district administration has officially classified the entire district as a “water-scarce area” until June 30.
This initiative is designed to guarantee a fair allocation of drinking water and avert a worsening crisis, as outlined by Jabalpur District Magistrate Raghavendra Singh in a recent notification.
The district administration emphasized, “This declaration has been made to ensure equitable distribution of drinking water throughout both rural and urban regions and to fulfill public needs during the summer months.”
It has been observed that groundwater levels are declining rapidly due to excessive extraction, leading to stress on tube wells and other sources, raising alarms about drinking water availability in the upcoming weeks.
In response to this pressing situation, the administration has designated all primary water sources exclusively for drinking and domestic usage. “All rivers, streams, stop-dams, and public water sources are reserved solely for essential purposes,” according to the order. Any unauthorized non-essential use is strictly prohibited.
Tight restrictions have also been applied to groundwater extraction. “No individual is permitted to construct a new tube well without prior authorization,” the order states. Applications for drilling will be scrutinized by Sub-Divisional Revenue Officers following thorough verification.
Authorities have issued warnings of strict legal repercussions for any violations. This order will be enforced under the Madhya Pradesh Drinking Water Preservation Act as well as the provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Officials will conduct regular monitoring to ensure adherence.
The administration has also introduced emergency measures. “If public water sources become depleted, private water sources may be temporarily acquired to sustain supply. This action is aimed at ensuring that no area experiences a complete shortage,” they stated.
This declaration comes in light of reports concerning inconsistent water supply across various parts of the district. As temperatures continue to rise, the demand for water has surged significantly.
In urging public cooperation, the administration remarked, “Water conservation is vital to effectively manage the situation.”
