Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 8 (NationPress) The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given the green light for the significant Rs 13,037.66 crore Jaipur Metro Phase-2 initiative. This ambitious project features a transformative 41 km North–South corridor stretching from Prahladpura to Todi Mod, incorporating 36 stations throughout the city.
This project will be executed by the Rajasthan Metro Rail Corporation Limited (RMRCL), a partnership between the Central and Rajasthan governments.
The Phase-2 corridor is set to enhance connectivity to key areas such as the Sitapura Industrial Area, VKIA, Jaipur Airport, Tonk Road, SMS Hospital and Stadium, Ambabari, and Vidhyadhar Nagar. Notably, it includes underground stations in the airport vicinity and aims to seamlessly integrate with the existing Phase-1 metro line through strategically planned interchanges and feeder systems, creating a cohesive and continuous metro network across the city, as stated in a Cabinet announcement.
The operational Phase-1 of the Jaipur Metro currently runs along an 11.64 km East–West corridor from Mansarovar to Badi Chaupar, featuring 11 stations. This line connects vital residential and commercial zones to the Central Business District of Jaipur, including the historic Heritage Walled City. The new Phase-2, aligned along the North–South axis, will complement the existing corridor, offering extensive metro connectivity throughout Jaipur, thereby significantly alleviating traffic congestion and enhancing urban mobility.
Currently, Jaipur Metro Phase-1 accommodates an average of approximately 60,000 passengers daily on its crucial 11.64 km route. The addition of Phase-2 is anticipated to dramatically boost ridership, greatly increasing the reliance on public transport in Jaipur and reducing the need for private vehicles.
Phase-2 of the Jaipur Metro has undergone extensive reviews, including consultations at various levels such as Inter-Ministerial discussions, assessments by the Network Planning Group, and evaluations by the Public Investment Board. The project boasts an Economic Internal Rate of Return (EIRR) exceeding the required threshold (over 14 percent), indicating robust socio-economic viability. Financial backing will come from equity contributions by the Central and Rajasthan governments, along with subordinate debt and multilateral funding, in line with the Metro Rail Policy of 2017, as per the communique.
This initiative aligns with the Rajasthan TOD Policy-2025, proposed UMTA reforms, and national objectives for sustainable urban transport. Aiming for completion by September 2031, Jaipur Metro Phase-2 is expected to significantly cut traffic congestion, lower vehicle emissions, and improve mobility for residents, workers, and tourists, reinforcing Jaipur's status as a modern, forward-looking city and contributing to the vision of Viksit Bharat and Viksit Rajasthan.
