Shimla, April 29 (NationPress) The Leader of the Opposition in Himachal Pradesh and ex-Chief Minister, Jairam Thakur, voiced strong criticism on Tuesday regarding the state government's decision to impose a fee on Hindu religious pilgrimages. He drew parallels with the historical jizya tax levied by the Muslim ruler Aurangzeb on the majority community.
Thakur stated, "The government led by Sukhvinder Sukhu continues to display an anti-Hindu stance. At times, the Chief Minister makes statements that are against Hindus, and at other times, he implements plans that adversely affect them. Now, we see the imposition of a fee on those embarking on religious pilgrimages to honor their faith."
He specifically pointed out the charges levied on devotees visiting Churdhar to pay their respects at the Shirgul Maharaj temple.
According to Thakur, "This move is widely opposed by local residents. Charging fees for religious pilgrimages within the state reveals the true intentions of the Congress government. In just two years, Sukhu's administration has turned into a government focused on fees."
The Churdhar peak, situated in the Sirmaur district, stands tall at an elevation of 11,965 feet, housing the ancient Srigul temple dedicated to Lord Shiva (Chooreshwar Mahadev) beneath its summit.
