New Delhi, March 7 (NationPress) Jan Aushadhi Diwas highlights India’s determination to deliver quality and affordable medications to all citizens, stated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday.

Each year on March 7th, 'Jan Aushadhi Diwas' is commemorated to enhance public awareness regarding the initiative and to encourage the adoption of generic medicines.

PM Modi emphasized that this program will contribute to the establishment of a healthy and fit nation. “Jan Aushadhi Diwas exemplifies our dedication to providing top-tier and accessible medications to the populace, guaranteeing a healthy and fit India,” he conveyed in a message on the social media platform X.

The Jan Aushadhi Kendras, initiated under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP), is a public welfare initiative that offers quality medications at reasonable prices to the general public.

Launched in November 2008, the scheme is executed by the Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Bureau of India (PMBI).

As per the Health Ministry data, over 15,000 Jan Aushadhi Kendras have been established nationwide. Uttar Pradesh holds the highest number of centres (2,657), followed by Kerala (1,528), Karnataka (1,425), and Tamil Nadu (1,363). Lakshadweep has the least number of centres (1), followed by Ladakh (2) and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands (9).

Earlier on Friday, Union Health Minister JP Nadda mentioned that the Jan Aushadhi Kendras nationwide are providing medications at prices reduced by 50-90 percent daily to around 10 lakh individuals. This has allowed citizens to save Rs 30,000 crore, which can now be allocated for their families, education, and overall well-being.

The PMBJP offers around “2,047 drugs and 300 surgical items catering to a wide array of therapeutic requirements,” Nadda noted.

The Union Minister added that “the PMBJP ensures sustainability through rigorous quality checks, competitive procurement, and a robust supply chain overseen by PMBI.”

Stating that the Kendras are “redefining affordable healthcare,” Nadda announced plans to “launch 25,000 Jan Aushadhi Kendras by March 31, 2027, throughout the nation.”

Significantly, the Jan Aushadhi Kendras have achieved sales of medications exceeding Rs 6,400 crore, with sales increasing by 200 times over the last decade.
