Agartala, April 6 (NationPress) The Leader of the Opposition (LoP) and CPI-M Tripura State Secretary Jitendra Choudhury on Sunday took over the role of politburo member from former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, marking his position as the third communist leader from Tripura to join the party's apex policy-making entity.
Following the CPI-M’s 24th party Congress held in Madurai (Tamil Nadu), the Left party announced an 85-member Central Committee and an 18-member politburo on Sunday, which includes two women leaders – U. Vasuki and Mariam Dhawale.
Among the 85-member central committee from Tripura, former ministers Manik Dey, Naresh Jamatia, Ratan Bhowmik, and woman leader Krishna Rakshit were included, while four leaders were excluded due to health issues and age restrictions. Notably, former Chief Ministers Nripen Chakraborty (1978 to 1988) and Manik Sarkar (1998 to 2018) had previously been politburo members before Choudhury, who is distinguished as the only tribal leader from the state to join the CPI-M’s highest policy-making assembly.
At the age of 76, Manik Sarkar resigned from his position as a politburo member due to the party's introduction of a 75-year upper age limit for retirement from significant leadership roles, including the politburo and central committee.
Jitendra Choudhury, aged 67, had become the CPI-M Tripura state secretary in September 2021 following the death of his predecessor Goutam Das; he served as minister for four terms in the cabinets led by Manik Sarkar from 1993 to 2014.
He is the second tribal leader to hold the position of state Secretary of CPI-M in Tripura, succeeding former Chief Minister Dasaratha Deb, who, along with another former Chief Minister Nripen Chakraborty, were pivotal figures in the Left movement in Tripura.
Having joined the CPI-M in 1981 after a prolonged mass movement, Choudhury was the Minister for Forest, Information and Cultural Affairs, and Tribal Welfare within the Left Front government led by former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar.
A former Chief Whip of the CPI-M group in Lok Sabha, Jitendra Choudhury also serves as the national Convener of the party-supported Adivasi Adhikar Rashtriya Manch, and is the President of the party-affiliated tribal organization, Tripura Rajya Upajati Ganamukti Parishad.
