Agartala, Jan 31 (NationPress) Jitendra Chaudhury, a member of the central committee of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), has been re-elected as the Tripura state Secretary during the three-day 24th state conference of the Left party, held from January 29 to 31.
The 67-year-old leader, who previously served as a Lok Sabha member and as a minister, first assumed the role of Tripura's CPI-M Secretary in 2022.
Chaudhury announced that a 62-member state committee, which includes seven women, and a 14-member secretariat were established during the state conference.
He mentioned that 40 party members were selected to participate in the 24th CPI-M party Congress, scheduled from April 2 to 6 in Madurai.
Despite the alleged “conspiracies of the BJP government and the ruling party,” Chaudhury noted that thousands of CPI-M leaders, members, and supporters gathered for public events on January 29, part of the state conference held every three years.
“We had sought police permission for any of three venues for the public gathering on January 29, but the police did not grant permission for any location until January 27. They provided excuse after excuse for denying the venue,” said Chaudhury, who also serves as the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the state.
He further stated that the party had submitted a request a month prior to hold a public meeting at Swami Vivekananda Maidan Stadium in Agartala.
Chaudhury explained: “The state government rejected our request, citing a prior SHG fair at the venue. We then sought permission for two other locations, which were also denied. Ultimately, permission was granted at the last moment for a smaller venue in front of Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan for the large public rally.”
A total of 414 delegates participated in the conference, which featured speeches from CPI-M Politburo members including Prakash Karat, Brinda Karat, Manik Sarkar, and Ashok Dhawale, who is also the President of the All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS).
Senior party leader and former minister Manik Dey indicated that the conference has established nine key demands to initiate a statewide movement shortly.
These demands encompass abolishing the new Education policy, safeguarding against violence towards women, and designating last year's floods in Tripura as a national disaster.
