Bengaluru, April 22 (NationPress) Chief Minister Siddaramaiah convened an urgent meeting on Tuesday with high-ranking officials following a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which resulted in the death of a tourist from Karnataka.
Several other tourists have sustained serious injuries in this attack.
As per the current reports, a tourist from Karnataka was shot in front of his wife and son. The victim has been identified as Manjunath Rao, a realtor hailing from Shivamogga district in Karnataka.
He was visiting Kashmir with his wife, Pallavi, a bank manager, and their 18-year-old son, Abhi. Both Pallavi and Abhi are safe and currently receiving support from the local authorities. Additional information regarding other tourists from Karnataka is pending.
A statement from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) indicated, “Upon learning about the targeting of Kannadigas in a terrorist attack in Kashmir, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah promptly assembled senior officials to gather more details.”
After discussions with the Chief Secretary and high-ranking police officials, the Chief Minister urged for rapid action.
In line with his directives, a team of officials has been dispatched to Kashmir, and police personnel have been deployed. The Resident Commissioner in Delhi has been assigned to oversee the requisite follow-up actions, according to the CMO statement.
On X, CM Siddaramaiah stated, “I vehemently condemn the despicable terror attack on tourists in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. Kannadigas are among the victims of this tragic event.
“Upon receiving the news, I organized an urgent meeting and assessed the situation with the Chief Secretary and senior police officials. I have also communicated with the Resident Commissioner in Delhi.
“In response to my directions, two teams — one comprising senior officials and another of police members — have been sent to Jammu and Kashmir. An adventure team from the Sports Department, led by Commissioner Chetan, is also heading there.”
“We are vigilantly monitoring the situation. All necessary assistance will be provided. Please be assured, the Government of Karnataka stands resolutely with those affected,” he remarked.
Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs and Tourism, H.K. Patil, commenting on the situation, mentioned that he had spoken with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
“We have obtained preliminary information indicating that 12 individuals from Karnataka were at the site. We are confirming the details. We have also been informed that one person has lost their life in the terrorist attack,” he stated.
“We will do everything possible to assist them,” he emphasized.
BJP MP B.Y. Raghavendra, representing the Shivamogga Lok Sabha constituency, confirmed that the surviving woman and her son are in a secure location.
“The information has been relayed to the Delhi Resident Commissioner. Our immediate focus is on repatriating Manjunath’s body to Shivamogga,” he added.
