Additionally, the local court is scheduled to hear the bail petition of Satish, also known as Panduranga, who posted a controversial message on social media that incited the violence and riots.
The court has instructed law enforcement to present the accused, currently in judicial custody, before the court today.
Previously, Karnataka Police detained Satish, a resident of Kalyannagar in Mysuru, due to a provocative social media post that contained communal remarks against a specific community, incited by the celebration of the Aam Aadmi Party's defeat in the Delhi Assembly elections, which led to unrest in Mysuru.
His post mocked Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, former Chief Ministers Akhilesh Yadav and Arvind Kejriwal, while also making inflammatory communal comments against a particular religious group. The post gained significant traction on social media by Monday evening.
Later that night, a group from the minority community gathered outside the Udayagiri police station, demanding action against the accused.
Despite police efforts to calm the situation, including the involvement of religious leaders, the crowd became aggressive, resulting in stone-pelting directed at the police station.
The mob also assaulted the official vehicle of the DCP. As the situation escalated, law enforcement resorted to a lathi-charge and subsequently deployed tear gas. Additional police units were called in, and senior officials along with local political leaders assured the crowd that action would be taken against the accused.
Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara reiterated on Thursday that severe measures would be enacted against the rioters, with more arrests expected.
The Karnataka BJP has called for unity among all parties to address necessary actions for safeguarding internal security, emphasizing the need to support the police force that provides protection.
