Bengaluru, Feb 20 (NationPress) An Islamic religious educator, who incited a mob to attack a police station in Mysuru city over a contentious social media post regarding the Aam Aadmi Party's defeat in the Delhi Assembly elections, was apprehended on Thursday.
The maulvi has been recognized as Mufti Mustaq Maqbooli.
Maqbooli was taken into custody by the special unit of the City Central Crime Branch (CCB), eleven days following the incident.
The authorities have obtained a video clip of Maqbooli, which has circulated widely, showcasing his highly inflammatory remarks.
The suspect, known as Satish or Panduranga, a resident of Kalyannagar in Mysuru, had published a post mocking Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi, former Chief Ministers Akhilesh Yadav and Arvind Kejriwal. The post also included provocative communal comments targeting a specific religious community, which quickly gained traction on social media.
A group associated with the minority community assembled outside the Udayagiri Police Station demanding action against the accused.
Despite police efforts to calm the crowd, including invoking the help of religious leaders, tensions escalated, leading to the mob throwing stones at the police station. The crowd also attacked the official vehicle of the DCP.
They shouted slogans, and as the situation spiraled, the police were compelled to conduct a lathi-charge.
Additional police forces were deployed, and senior officers along with local political figures urged the crowd, assuring them that the accused would face consequences. Eventually, they managed to persuade the mob to disperse.
Union Minister for Food, Public Distribution, and Consumer Affairs Pralhad Joshi expressed strong disapproval of the assault on police personnel in Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's hometown Mysuru, labeling it a shocking and regrettable event.
"The law and order situation in Karnataka is worsening with each passing day, and the recent events in Mysuru are a clear reflection of this. Mysuru, recognized as the cultural capital of Karnataka and the Chief Minister's hometown, should not be a place for such chaos. This indicates a severe collapse of law and order in the state," he stated.
He condemned the violent assault on the Udayagiri police station in Mysuru, where lawbreakers not only targeted the station but also attacked police officers. "It is ironic that such riots are unfolding in the Chief Minister's town," he commented.
