Mysuru (Karnataka), Feb 11 (NationPress) Karnataka Police have taken into custody one individual linked to a contentious social media post that made communal remarks against a specific community while celebrating the defeat of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the New Delhi Assembly elections, igniting unrest in Mysuru city.
The individual, residing in Kalyannagar, Mysuru, shared a post mocking Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi, former Chief Ministers Akhilesh Yadav and Arvind Kejriwal. The post contained provocative communal statements directed at a certain religious group and quickly gained traction on social media on Monday night.
By late Monday evening, members of the minority community gathered outside the Udayagiri police station, demanding action against the accused.
Despite police efforts to calm the crowd by involving religious leaders, tensions escalated, leading to stone-pelting at the police station.
In response to the unrest, the police employed a lathi-charge and subsequently used tear gas to disperse the crowd.
Additional police units were deployed, and senior officers along with local political leaders intervened, assuring the crowd that the accused would face consequences, which ultimately led to the dispersal of the protest.
While the police have managed to stabilize the situation, tension remains in the area.
This incident echoes a previous event on April 16, 2022, in Hubballi, where derogatory comments about Islam in a WhatsApp message led to a mob surrounding a police station.
Following that incident, the police arrested the suspect, yet the mob insisted on taking matters into their own hands.
The following day saw thousands participating in a procession, climbing onto a police vehicle, and hoisting an Islamic flag.
They attacked the police, resulting in injuries to several officers, and half of Hubballi was paralyzed that day.
The Karnataka government later decided to dismiss cases related to the Hubballi police riot, which had over 150 individuals charged for violence against law enforcement in 2022, stirring further controversy and opposition from the BJP.
