Bengaluru, Feb 11 (NationPress) In response to a mob assault on a police station triggered by a controversial social media post concerning the defeat of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the Assembly elections, Karnataka's Home Minister G. Parameshwara declared on Tuesday that steps have been taken to apprehend individuals who incited violence by throwing stones at the Udayagiri police station in Mysuru and to initiate legal proceedings against them.
Addressing media personnel in Bengaluru, Parameshwara mentioned that a social media post had incited tensions within a community.
“The police have detained the individual responsible for the post. However, approximately 200 individuals congregated near the police station, insisting on the handover of the accused. This escalated into a disturbance with stones being hurled at the station. The police needed to deploy tear gas to manage the situation. I have ordered authorities to apprehend those involved in the stone-throwing and to take appropriate measures,” he explained.
He emphasized that it is not their role to determine who is just or unjust.
“The police operate within the framework of the law, and any missteps on their part will also be addressed,” he stated.
He noted that police inspectors and PSIs have been suspended in multiple instances, and appropriate action has been taken against officers.
In relation to the accusations against Bhadravati Congress MLA Sangamesh's son for verbally assaulting a female officer, he remarked, “I am aware of the inappropriate comments made. If he has violated the law, he will face consequences. The local police will conduct an investigation and take necessary actions. The government does not issue directives for every issue,” he clarified.
Previously, Karnataka Police detained an individual linked to a contentious social media post that contained communal remarks against a specific community celebrating the AAP's defeat in the New Delhi Assembly elections, which incited unrest in Mysuru.
The accused, residing in Kalyannagar, Mysuru, posted derogatory comments about Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi, former Chief Ministers Akhilesh Yadav, and Arvind Kejriwal. The post also included inflammatory communal statements against a certain religious group. It gained traction on social media by Monday evening.
By late Monday night, a group from the minority community assembled in front of the Udayagiri police station demanding action against the accused.
Although police efforts to calm the crowd and the involvement of religious leaders were made, the situation escalated into violence, with stones being thrown at the police station.
The crowd chanted slogans, and as the situation spiraled out of control, police resorted to lathi charges and subsequently fired tear gas to disperse them.
Additional police units were deployed, and senior police officials, along with local political figures, engaged with the crowd, assuring them that action would be taken against the accused, successfully persuading the mob to cease their protest.
While the police managed to regain control, tensions continue to linger in the vicinity.
