Kozhikode, Oct 11 (NationPress) The Kerala Leader of Opposition, V.D. Satheesan, expressed strong condemnation on Saturday regarding the violent attack on Congress MP Shafi Parambil by police personnel. He characterized this incident as a calculated effort to silence the voices of the Opposition.

Shafi Parambil is currently recuperating in a private hospital after undergoing a lengthy, three-hour surgery.

The medical report released on Saturday revealed that Parambil was admitted after sustaining facial fractures to both the left and right nasal bones due to the alleged assault.

Surgical intervention was performed, and he is now in recovery.

This unfortunate event occurred on Friday night during a demonstration by supporters of the Congress-led UDF at Perambara.

Satheesan accused law enforcement of targeting Parambil deliberately to distract the public from more significant issues.

“When blood is shed, justice must be pursued. Police officers, who receive government salaries, should be reminded that their pay does not solely come from the AKG Centre. There must be stringent actions taken against all police officials involved in this violent crackdown,” he stated.

Additionally, he pointed out that the police intentionally obstructed a Congress procession, escalating tensions.

“While about 3,000 UDF members were participating, over 200 CPI-M supporters were prevented by police from crossing paths with the procession, resulting in injuries among several activists,” Satheesan noted.

“This situation aims to protect the state government, the Chief Minister, and the CPI-M from accountability. If relevant actions are not taken against the involved police officials, we will intensify our protests,” he warned.

The UDF leadership has reiterated its commitment to mobilize members for protests and public demonstrations, seeking accountability from law enforcement for the attack.

This incident has heightened political tensions within the state, raising significant concerns regarding police behavior during public protests and the government’s approach to managing the Opposition’s activities.

Point of View

It is essential to view this incident as a reflection of the growing tensions between state authorities and opposition parties. It underscores the need for law enforcement agencies to maintain impartiality and accountability, particularly during public demonstrations. The focus should remain on the protection of democratic principles and the voices of dissent.
