Kolkata, June 27 (NationPress) All three individuals apprehended in connection with the rape of a law college student on her college grounds two days prior were linked to the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), the student faction of the ruling Trinamool Congress, according to police sources and peers of the suspects on Friday.
One of the detained, Monojit Mishra (30), a former student of the law college, was described as influential and closely connected to several prominent Trinamool Congress leaders, as stated by fellow students.
He had recently been appointed as temporary staff at the college by the institution's governing body.
The other two individuals, Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20) and Zaib Ahmed (19), are current students and reportedly active participants in the Trinamool Congress student union activities, according to their classmates.
The trio was presented in a Kolkata city court on Friday and has been remanded to police custody until July 1.
Investigators have confiscated the mobile phones of all three suspects and are currently analyzing these devices for additional evidence, as claimed by Public Prosecutor Sourin Ghosal.
Questions regarding the overall administrative functioning of the college have arisen due to the timing of the alleged assault.
The incident allegedly occurred after 7 p.m. on June 25.
According to the Vice-Principal, Noyna Chatterjee, the institution operates as a day college, concluding classes by 5 p.m.
The First Information Report (FIR) indicates that the victim was summoned to the common room on the college premises at 7 p.m. on that Friday.
This raises concerns about how the suspects could operate from the common room and summon the victim at 7 p.m. when the main gate is supposed to be closed for students at 5 p.m.
The victim has also accused the accused of receiving aid from a security guard on the college property in orchestrating the despicable crime.
Upon her arrival at the common room, Mishra allegedly demanded she demonstrate her loyalty to TMCP.
According to the complaint, sensing malicious intent behind the request, she attempted to leave the campus but was forcefully taken to a guard room on the premises where the assault occurred.
She has also alleged that the security staff acted as passive observers during the assault.
The victim claimed that the accused threatened her against reporting the incident.
Trinakur Bhattacharya, State TMCP President, stated that if found guilty, the accused should face severe punishment, regardless of their affiliation with the student wing of the Trinamool Congress.
