Kolkata, Nov 27 (NationPress) The Kolkata Police released an important advisory on best practices and cautions for individuals who engage with new acquaintances through dating applications.
This advisory comes in light of a tragic event where a chartered accountant was discovered deceased in a hotel room located in Kasba, Kolkata.
The victim, Adarsh Losalka, was murdered after he declined to pay Rs 20,000 to his 'girlfriend', whom he had met on a dating app, while attempting to thwart a robbery.
Authorities apprehended the woman and her accomplice just a day following the crime.
During police questioning, they admitted to blackmailing clients like Losalka, engaging in extortion.
In light of increasing incidents of blackmail and fraud linked to dating apps, the Kolkata Police have issued this warning.
Numerous individuals have suffered significant financial losses after falling prey to schemes originating from dating applications in Kolkata and nearby areas.
The police recommend that people refrain from sharing bank details or any personal information with short-term contacts on dating apps under any circumstances.
It has been reported that some gangs are blackmailing or deceiving young men by ensnaring them through these platforms.
According to police reports, men are also part of these gangs, targeting potential 'clients' for financial scams.
The police emphasized that even if an individual decides to meet their 'girlfriend' at a hotel or elsewhere, they should never disclose any bank information.
Moreover, it is advisable not to carry valuables or ATM cards during such outings.
"Individuals have also been urged to exercise caution when conducting online transactions. Since the new acquaintance from a dating app is relatively unknown, one should ensure that their mobile PIN or pattern remains unseen during interactions," a senior officer from Kolkata Police stated.
Police sources revealed that last month, detectives from the Kolkata Police Cyber Crime Department conducted a raid on an illegal call center situated near Minto Park in South Kolkata.
Seventeen individuals, including sixteen women, were arrested as they were extorting money from those seeking companionship, under the pretense of romantic interest.
In another incident that occurred last month, a woman named Ankita Apte lured a businessman to a hotel in the East Jadavpur area, where she made him drink excessively. After he fell asleep, she stole his gold ornaments and vanished.
