Bengaluru, Sep 27 (NationPress) In a significant challenge to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, the Karnataka State Contractor Association (KSCA) has addressed a letter to the CM, claiming that corruption levels under the Congress-led government in the state have surged, eclipsing those seen during the previous BJP administration.
The correspondence, endorsed by president R. Manjunath and G. M. Ravindra, highlights that when he was in the Opposition, CM Siddaramaiah promised that his administration would eradicate kickbacks.
Furthermore, the letter asserts that projects assigned to Nirmiti Kendras and Karnataka Rural Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (KRIDL) have been given to loyalists of MLAs and Ministers. These individuals subsequently subcontract these projects to contractors, demanding kickbacks.
"It is challenging to guarantee the quality of work when the projects are subcontracted to us," the letter emphasizes. It also underscores, "We wish to remind you that our struggle against corruption contributed to your government taking power."
Recollecting the previous BJP-led regime, the State Contractors' Association had accused that 40 percent of commissions were standard practice. The KSCA had previously reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on this matter. The Congress party had made the 40 percent commission a focal point during its election campaign against the BJP.
Addressing the backlog of bills amounting to Rs 32,000 crore, the letter stated: "Every time you (referring to CM Siddaramaiah) provide us with assurances and instruct officials to take action. Out of respect for you, we have been patient, hoping you would resolve our issues. However, we have yet to see any benefits from your administration."
Regarding bill clearance, the departments are not adhering to seniority. Only about 15 to 20 percent of pending bills are settled quarterly. The Municipal Administration, Urban Development, and Labour departments are alleged to be engaged in corrupt tender practices, according to the letter.
It further claims that officials are restructuring tenders into packages to ensure contracts are awarded to their preferred group of influential contractors, with the concerned ministers turning a blind eye.
This development is poised to incite controversy in Karnataka, with the Opposition likely to intensify its criticism of the Congress-led government.
