Live mortar shell found near CRPF campus in Jaipur, safely neutralised
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
A live mortar shell was discovered in a village field near the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) campus in Amer, Jaipur, on Monday, 17 August, triggering panic among residents and prompting an immediate multi-agency response. The device was successfully neutralised by the Bomb Disposal Squad by around 2 pm, with a loud explosion heard during the controlled disposal.
How the Shell Was Found
A local woman first spotted the suspicious object while walking through Thakrala ki Dhani in Ward No. 148 at approximately 10:30 am. She alerted her family, who then informed the police control room. Amer police and a Civil Defence team arrived within minutes and dispersed the crowd that had gathered around the object.
Following an initial assessment, the Bomb Disposal Squad was called in and identified the device as a mortar shell. According to Deputy Controller of Civil Defence Amit Sharma, the control room received the alert at approximately 11:05 am, and personnel reached the site roughly eight minutes later.
Disposal Operation
The mortar shell was secured and transported away from the populated area to a secluded location. It was placed in a deep pit and neutralised at around 2 pm. The controlled detonation produced a loud explosion audible to nearby residents.
Amer Station House Officer Gautam Dotasara confirmed that the live shell had been found among waste in a field within the village. The disposal operation was led by Amit Sharma, with CDE Asrar Ahmed, Rajesh Kumar, Yunus Khan, Mohammad Bilal, Deepak Saini, and Ghanshyam Sharma among the personnel involved.
Investigation Underway
Police have registered a formal case and launched an investigation to determine the origin of the shell and how it came to be in the village field. The proximity of the discovery to the CRPF campus has added urgency to the probe. Notably, the presence of an unexploded ordnance in a residential ward raises questions about whether the device is a stray remnant from historical military activity or something more recent.
Authorities have not yet ruled out any angle, and further forensic examination of the shell is expected to assist investigators in tracing its source.
