New Delhi, Aug 12 (NationPress) The Lok Sabha has granted approval on Tuesday for a motion that extends the deadline for the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) to submit its report regarding the 'One Nation, One Election' Bill.
The committee is now expected to deliver its findings by the first day of the last week of the Winter Session in 2025.
The motion was introduced by P.P. Chaudhary, Chairman of the 'One Nation, One Election' Panel, who called upon the House to provide additional time for the committee to finalize its work on the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024, as well as the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024.
"I am moving that this House extend the time for the presentation of the Report of the Joint Committee on the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024 and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024, until the first day of the last week of the Winter Session, 2025," stated Chaudhary in the Lower House amidst loud protests from the Opposition.
The Bills were initially introduced in the Lok Sabha in December 2024 and were subsequently sent to the Joint Committee of both Houses for further scrutiny.
This extension will enable the panel to finalize and present its detailed recommendations.
Moreover, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla revealed a three-member panel to investigate claims against Justice Yashwant Varma, who has been embroiled in controversy since burnt cash was discovered on March 14 in an outhouse of his official residence while he served on the Delhi High Court.
The panel consists of Justice Aravind Kumar from the Supreme Court, Chief Justice Manindra Mohan from the Madras High Court, and senior advocate B.V. Acharya.
"The committee will strive to submit its report as soon as possible. The proposal will remain pending until the inquiry committee's report is received," announced Speaker Om Birla.
This announcement followed the submission of an impeachment notice to the Lok Sabha Speaker on July 21 by 145 MPs from both the ruling and Opposition benches, seeking the removal of Justice Varma, who currently serves as a judge on the Allahabad High Court.
