Mamata Banerjee Steps Down from Multiple Office Positions Ahead of Bengal Elections
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 24 (NationPress) On Tuesday evening, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee stepped down from various "office of profit" roles she currently occupies, as the significant two-phase Assembly elections in West Bengal approach next month.
She is the candidate representing the Trinamool Congress from the Bhabanipur Assembly constituency located in South Kolkata.
Following her resignation from these "office-of-profit" roles, the state administration, now under the direct supervision of the Election Commission of India (ECI), activated all necessary procedures to finalize the resignations promptly, as noted by an insider from the state secretariat, Nabanna.
“The Chief Minister has resigned from multiple positions effective immediately, and relevant departments have been instructed to expedite the acceptance of her resignation. This resignation applies to both the listed positions and any other roles she holds in organizations or committees beyond that. Departments have also been directed to provide a report on this matter within a stipulated timeframe,” the insider from the state secretariat elaborated.
Reports indicate that the state government departments where the Chief Minister held the "office of profit" positions include sectors such as environment, forest, health, and minority affairs, among others.
Additionally, she stepped down from her roles in organizations like the West Bengal Disaster Management Authority and the West Bengal Public Policy and Planning Board, among others.
“The Chief Minister's decision to resign from these posts is aimed at promoting transparency, despite the absence of any official obligation to do so,” commented a senior Trinamool Congress leader and state cabinet member.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has nominated the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, to contest against the Chief Minister in Bhabanipur.
Adhikari is also running for the Nandigram Assembly constituency in East Midnapore, where he is already a sitting and two-time legislator.
