Today, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai inaugurated the "Pandum Cafe," a humble establishment nestled within the Police Lines complex here – but for its employees, it represents a renewed opportunity at life.

Fagni, a gentle mother from Narayanpur, meticulously wipes a table with a steady hand, her eyes gleaming as she reminisces about the day she exchanged the burden of an insurgent's rucksack for an apron.

"We lived in darkness back then," she recalls. Once ensnared in the conflicts of Naxalite violence, Fagni is among the cafe's trailblazers – survivors and former militants who have opted for peace over chaos.

"Today, I serve people with a smile. It feels like a rebirth. Coffee instead of gunpowder... and the earnings I make? They are clean, they are mine, and they bring genuine peace."

Next to her, Pushpa Thakur from Sukma stirs a pot of fragrant filter coffee. A decade ago, aspirations for a stable home for her children felt as unreachable as the cities she had only heard about in whispers.

"We couldn’t even dream of giving our families dignity," she reflects, looking at a worn photo of her children pinned to the cafe's bulletin board.

"Now, every rupee I earn here is a stride toward their future. This place – it’s not merely a job; it’s liberation."

Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai shared on his X account following the café's inauguration, "Pandum Cafe: A subtle miracle emerging from Bastar’s battle-scarred landscape. Where gunfire once stifled dreams, the scent of fresh coffee now permeates the air. Today, in Jagdalpur’s heart, a new chapter unfolds—one penned not in fear, but in hope. Here, former Naxal cadres and the families they once threatened stand united, donning aprons instead of anger, serving smiles instead of slogans."

This quaint cafe exemplifies that when determination meets redemption, even the darkest areas of Bastar can shine with dignity, peace, and the promise of a brighter tomorrow, he emphasized during the inauguration.

The cafe's name, "Pandum," pays homage to the resilient spirit of Bastar's tribal soul, but its true enchantment is found in the stories shared behind the counter. Birendra Thakur, a robust former cadre with calloused hands from both rifles and coffee-making, nods as he recounts his surprising transformation.

"I thought returning would be impossible – the stares, the shame. But the police and administration supported us, trusted us. Hygiene training, customer interactions, and even how to dream big as entrepreneurs. Working alongside victims like Ashmati here? It's our way of apologizing, of building bridges where walls once existed."

Ashmati, a local from Bastar, was a casualty of the very violence that traumatized her community. Initially, she viewed ex-militants with skepticism.

"It wasn’t easy at first," she confesses. "But witnessing their dedication during training, hearing their regrets – it mended something within me too. We’re not adversaries anymore; we’re family, crafting rotis and futures together."

Premila Baghel, the fifth member of this close-knit team, oversees the cash register with quiet pride.

"The Chief Minister engaged with us today, listened as if we mattered. His words weren't mere politics – they felt like a green light to hope," she mentioned.

During a heartfelt discussion over chai, Chief Minister Sai was clear. "Pandum Cafe isn’t just bricks and beans," he remarked.

"It’s a beacon – hope for the hopeless, advancement amidst the shadows of Naxalism. These young individuals, once consumed by violence, are now builders of peace. With our backing, Bastar is rewriting its narrative, one cup at a time."

Supported by comprehensive training in everything from food safety to managing peak hours, the cafe's launch signifies a bold governmental initiative for rehabilitation.

This is part of a larger movement eliminating Maoist strongholds, providing not pity, but purpose – sustainable employment that heals rifts and restores communities.

"This isn’t merely survival. This is living," Fagni stated.
