Meghalaya Chief Minister Approves Extension for New Assembly Construction

Shillong, Dec 4 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad Sangma, announced on Wednesday that a 100-day extension has been approved for the completion of the new Assembly building situated in the Mawdiangdiang area of Shillong.
According to the Chief Minister, "The engineers from the PWD Department along with contractors have convened several times to ensure that every detail is meticulously addressed. They have requested more time as they prefer not to hastily finish the project. The High Power Committee has concurred to grant this additional time for completion," he stated.
The discussions during the meeting revolved around the ongoing construction progress and the interior work, which includes the active installation of the dome structure.
Sangma stated, "Through meticulous planning and design adjustments, we have successfully reduced the dome's weight from 3,000 metric tons to 85 metric tons for improved stability."
In addition, the Chief Minister laid the foundation stone for the Shillong Ropeway Project, which was inaugurated by the President of India, Draupadi Murmu, on January 16 this year, alongside Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh.
This marks Meghalaya’s inaugural passenger ropeway project, which will be developed in collaboration with POMA, a French-based company tasked primarily with supplying necessary equipment for the initiative.
During the event, the Chief Minister commended all stakeholders for efficiently completing the requisite documentation and formalities to launch the project.
"We faced multiple hurdles, including land acquisition and permissions, as well as the establishment of the Meghalaya Ropeway Development Authority to ensure safety standards and licensing. The initiation of this project is the result of four extensive years of groundwork," he added.
He expressed appreciation to the Raid Laban Dorbar Shnong Pyllun for their collaborative efforts. The ropeway will traverse areas including Laban, Madan Laban, Upper Lumparing, Lower Lumparing, Lumkjatsngi, Oxford Hills, and Rngi Shillong.
While discussing community involvement in the venture, the Chief Minister remarked, "It is crucial for the community to partner with the government. This project stands as a testament to the collaboration among all stakeholders. The initiative will ensure revenue generation, benefiting the Dorbar and other involved parties."
Sangma also praised the armed forces, particularly the Air Force, for their unwavering support and assistance in commencing this project.
