Ropeway: A Promising Solution for City Traffic Congestion, Says Meghalaya CM

Shillong, Dec 4 (NationPress) Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma announced on Wednesday during the foundation stone laying ceremony for a ropeway project in Shillong that this initiative represents the most effective approach to tackle the heavy traffic issues faced by the hill town.
"This ropeway is a viable option for urban transportation and could significantly ease the city's congestion," he stated.
Today, Sangma inaugurated the foundation stone for the Shillong Ropeway Project, which was originally laid by President of India Draupadi Murmu on January 16 earlier this year, alongside Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh.
This marks Meghalaya's inaugural passenger ropeway project, which will be developed in collaboration with the French company POMA, primarily tasked with supplying the necessary equipment for the project.
The Chief Minister praised all stakeholders involved for finalizing the essential documentation and formalities required to kickstart the project.
"There were several hurdles, including land acquisition, permissions, and the establishment of the Meghalaya Ropeway Development Authority to ensure safety standards and licensing. The project’s initiation is the result of four years of dedicated effort," he remarked.
He also expressed appreciation to Raid Laban Dorbar Shnong Pyllun for their support. The ropeway will traverse through key areas such as Laban, Madan Laban, Upper Lumparing, Lower Lumparing, Lumkjatsngi, Oxford Hills, and Rngi Shillong.
Discussing the importance of community involvement, Sangma stated: "It is crucial for the community to collaborate with the government. This project is a testament to the partnership between all stakeholders. It will facilitate revenue generation, benefiting both the Dorbar and other project participants."
Sangma further acknowledged the support of the Armed Forces, particularly the Air Force, for their cooperation during the project’s initiation.
He also mentioned that the government is exploring alternative routes to connect tourist attractions and alleviate congestion at the landing site of the ropeway in Madan Laban.
The Chief Minister noted that the state government plans to construct a new route, approximately 4 km long, which will link to the main road at 101 Area, Upper Shillong.
The state is actively pursuing numerous infrastructure projects to enhance tourism, with the ropeway project being one significant initiative, he concluded.
