Shillong, Nov 28 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad K. Sangma, emphasized the pressing necessity for enhancing public transportation in the state on Friday. He unveiled a strategy to shift from traditional auto-rickshaws to electric vehicles, targeting an eco-friendly transport network in preparation for the National Games set for 2027.
During an event organized under the Tura Beautification Project at the District Auditorium in Tura, Sangma expressed his commitment to establishing a green public transport system before the grand sporting occasion.
He announced that the government was planning talks with auto-rickshaw associations regarding the exchange of existing fuel-powered vehicles for electric ones.
“I am dedicated to transitioning public transport to an eco-friendly model before the National Games 2027. To facilitate this, I will engage with the auto association about replacing current autos with electric versions,” stated the Chief Minister, highlighting that financial assistance would be available for auto owners who participate in this initiative.
He pointed out that adopting electric vehicles would not only diminish pollution levels but also promote sustainability.
This initiative is aligned with a broader vision to modernize the town into a more organized, greener, and smarter urban area through infrastructure enhancements and community involvement.
As part of the beautification program, cheques were distributed to 60 local communities, motivating residents to maintain clean and orderly neighborhoods. The top three performing localities were awarded Rs 1 lakh each, while other participating areas received Rs 70,000.
Furthermore, the Chief Minister emphasized the significance of creating parks, open spaces, and green areas for both children and senior citizens, stating that these initiatives play a vital role in nurturing community ties and enhancing life quality.
He encouraged localities with available land to step forward for the development and future management of such spaces by the community.
Senior district officials, Tura Municipal Board representatives, and members of locality development committees attended the event.
