Lok Sabha member Mian Altaf Ahmad had a narrow escape on Wednesday, 22 July when a landslide struck one of the vehicles in his convoy on the Poonch-Jammu National Highway in Jammu and Kashmir. The MP confirmed he had already crossed the affected stretch when debris hit the trailing vehicle, and said all personnel on board were safe.

What Happened on the Highway

The incident occurred on a vulnerable section of the highway where heavy rainfall had triggered fresh landslides and falling rocks. A vehicle accompanying Mian Altaf's cavalcade sustained damage after being struck by debris, though no injuries were reported among any of the occupants. The MP said he had crossed the landslide point before the debris fell and was not in immediate danger.

In a post on his X handle, Mian Altaf wrote: 'After Poonch, Reached Rajouri today to asses the ground situation arisen due to the Flashfloods and landslides in the area. On the way towards Rajouri a landslide had occurred blocking the road, however managed to reach Rajouri safely.'

Why the MP Was in the Region

Mian Altaf had been camping in Rajouri for several days, touring flood-affected areas of Poonch district to assess damage caused by flash floods and incessant rainfall. During his visits to remote and badly hit localities, he met affected families, reviewed the ground situation, and urged the district administration to accelerate rescue operations, relief distribution, rehabilitation efforts, and restoration of essential services.

Broader Weather Crisis in J&K

The incident reflects the worsening weather conditions across Jammu and Kashmir, where continuing heavy rainfall has triggered multiple landslides, road blockages, and traffic disruptions on several key highways, including the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. Rescue teams and road maintenance agencies have been working to restore connectivity and ensure public safety across the region.

Authorities have repeatedly advised commuters to avoid non-essential travel through landslide-prone stretches until conditions improve. Officials noted that the convoy incident underscores the serious risks that even senior officials and their security personnel face during the ongoing monsoon spell.

During his field visits, Mian Altaf crossed swollen streams and braved difficult terrain to reach communities cut off by floods and landslides. He has pressed the administration to fast-track the restoration of roads, power supply, and other critical infrastructure in the worst-affected pockets of Poonch and Rajouri. With the monsoon season far from over, authorities face continued pressure to keep highways passable and relief channels open.
