Kolkata, Feb 18 (NationPress) West Bengal agriculture and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sovandeb Chattopadhyay has initiated a privilege motion against the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, due to his alleged “unruly” behaviour in the House.
On Monday, Adhikari faced suspension from the House for a duration of one month.
The Minister further asserted that, apart from his unruly conduct during the proceedings, the LoP has issued misleading statements to the media regarding the reasons behind his suspension.
The Speaker of the House, Biman Bandopadhyay, accepted the motion and has also served a notice of breach of privilege against the LoP.
While these events unfolded on the Assembly floor, BJP legislators protested on the stairs leading to the Assembly hall against the suspension of Adhikari and three other members of their party.
In response to the breach of privilege notice, Adhikari remarked, "Ye dar accha laga (I liked the feeling of fear)".
“This marks the fifth occasion I have received a breach of privilege notice since 2021. I have faced suspension from the House on four occasions during this period. However, such notices will not deter me from speaking the truth,” Adhikari stated.
Meanwhile, Sovandeb Chattopadhyay explained that the suspension of the LoP was a result of his unruly actions in the House on Monday, which included throwing papers towards the Speaker's chair.
“Nevertheless, he later informed the media that he was suspended for attempting to advocate for the Hindus. Such misleading and unfounded statements warrant condemnation,” added the Minister.
In the latter half of the Assembly session on Tuesday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is scheduled to deliver her address regarding Governor C.V. Ananda Bose's opening speech for the Assembly's budget session held on February 10. It is anticipated that the Chief Minister’s address may be broadcast live by the Assembly authorities. Concurrently, the LoP will present his speech on the Governor’s address outside the House, and Adhikari has announced that his speech will also be streamed live via his social media platform.
