Giridih police in Jharkhand have cracked the murder of Shankar Kumar Singh, also known as Bindu Singh, a young man who had been missing for nearly a month after being allegedly lured under the pretext of arranging a meeting with a woman he wished to marry. One accused has been arrested, officials confirmed on Thursday, 23 July.

How the Case Unfolded

Hriday Narayan Singh (72), a resident of Siyarangi village under the Pirtand police station limits, had filed a missing person complaint on 1 July, stating that his son left home on 20 June saying he was headed to Giridih and never returned. Family members had suspected the involvement of a woman identified as Sonia Kumari, a resident of Dhanbad, along with others.

Given the gravity of the complaint, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was constituted under Abid Khan, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Dumri, on the instructions of the Superintendent of Police. The team deployed technical evidence, mobile phone location data, and human intelligence to pursue the case.

The Accused and the Alleged Motive

During the investigation, police brought Sonia Kumari from Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh for questioning. They also detained Chandan Kumar Bhokta (32), a resident of Sirsa village in Deoghar district. During interrogation, Bhokta allegedly confessed to the murder.

According to police, Shankar had wanted to marry Sonia Kumari, who was already married and had three children. Bhokta and members of the woman's in-laws' family were reportedly opposed to the proposed relationship. To end the dispute, Bhokta allegedly lured Shankar by promising to arrange a meeting with the woman and took him on a motorcycle to the Basaha forest in Tundi area of Dhanbad district.

The Crime and Evidence Recovered

At the secluded forest location, the accused allegedly struck Shankar repeatedly on the head with a stone and then strangled him with a scarf. The body was then concealed in the forest, according to police.

Acting on Bhokta's disclosure, the SIT recovered the victim's skeletal remains, an orange-coloured scarf allegedly used in the crime, clothing, slippers, a mobile phone, and a knife from the crime scene. Police stated that the case was resolved using scientific and technical evidence.
