Mizoram Police arrest 18-year-old for fake public holiday circular on social media
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mizoram Police have arrested an 18-year-old youth from Aizawl for circulating a forged government circular on social media that falsely declared a public holiday on 27 April due to heavy rainfall in the state. The arrest was made on Tuesday, 29 April 2025, within 24 hours of the complaint being filed, officials confirmed.
The Fake Circular and Its Impact
The fabricated document was designed to resemble an official notification from the General Administration Department of the Government of Mizoram. It fraudulently bore the names of Irene Zohlimpui Chongthu, Additional Secretary, General Administration Department, and a forged digital signature of Ch. Lalnunkima, Deputy Secretary, General Administration Department.
The bogus circular spread rapidly on social media platforms, causing considerable confusion and disruption among members of the public, many of whom reportedly stayed away from work or school on the basis of the false announcement.
How the Complaint Was Filed
According to a senior police official, a formal complaint was received on 27 April at the Cyber Crime Police Station from the Under Secretary of the General Administration Department. The complaint alleged that the fabricated circular was being widely shared online with the intent to mislead the public.
The Cyber Crime Police Station promptly registered a case under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and launched an investigation the same day.
Accused Traced and Arrested Within 24 Hours
Through what officials described as sustained and professional investigative efforts, Mizoram Police traced the origin of the fake social media post within 24 hours of the complaint. The accused, identified as Lalramhlua (18), a resident of Upper Republic Veng in Aizawl, was apprehended and taken into custody for further legal proceedings.
This is a notable turnaround time for a cyber crime investigation, reflecting the growing capacity of state-level cyber cells to act swiftly on digital misinformation cases.
Police Warning on Fake News
In an official statement, Mizoram Police issued a stern warning that the creation, circulation, or amplification of fake news, forged government documents, or misleading content on social media constitutes a serious criminal offence and will invite strict legal consequences. The statement emphasised that stringent action will be taken against all individuals found engaging in such unlawful activities.
Crime Review Meeting at Police Headquarters
Separately, a Crime Review Meeting was held at the Director General of Police Conference Hall at the Police Headquarters in Aizawl. The meeting was chaired by Director General of Police Sharad Agarwal and attended by Deputy Inspector Generals and Superintendents of Police from all 11 districts of Mizoram, along with other senior officers from the police headquarters.
As digital misinformation continues to disrupt civic life across India, the Mizoram case signals that state cyber cells are increasingly willing to pursue even individual-level offenders with speed and legal force.
