New Delhi, April 23 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi's planned visit to Kanpur on April 24 has been cancelled due to the tragic terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which resulted in 26 fatalities, including that of Shubham, a courageous young man from Kanpur.

Modi was set to inaugurate and lay the groundwork for development projects worth more than Rs 20,000 crore during this visit. However, in light of the tragic loss of lives and the prevailing somber atmosphere in the nation, the event has been called off.

“To honor the victims, it was deemed fitting to postpone any celebratory or formal public engagements in Kanpur during this period of mourning,” a statement revealed.

Although the Kanpur visit has been cancelled, the Prime Minister will still participate in a previously scheduled official event in Madhubani, Bihar, on April 24, to commemorate Panchayati Raj Diwas. This event will feature participation from citizens nationwide via video conference.

PM Modi shortened his trip to Saudi Arabia and returned to India on Wednesday morning. Upon his arrival, he conducted a high-level meeting at the Delhi airport with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.

A meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) is scheduled for 6 p.m. today.

While in Saudi Arabia, PM Modi was informed about the Pahalgam attack by Home Minister Amit Shah.

This terror strike, the most severe in the Valley since the 2019 Pulwama attack, took place on Tuesday at Baisaran, a picturesque meadow in Anantnag district accessible only on foot or by pony. A group of tourists visiting the site was targeted.

The Resistance Front, a covert entity linked to the banned Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba, has taken responsibility for this attack. An official government confirmation is still pending.

Condemning the incident, the Prime Minister stated that those responsible for this “atrocious act will face justice and will not escape punishment.”
