New Delhi, May 25 (NationPress) - Following the announcement by NITI Aayog CEO BVR Subrahmanyam that India is now the fourth-largest economy, Congress leader Pawan Khera questioned why the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi refrains from discussing the country's per capita income and seems to be "manipulating numbers".
In a conversation with IANS, Khera criticized the Modi administration, stating: "You may manipulate the figures. However, unemployment has reached a record that hasn't been seen in 45 years. There is a significant gap between the wealthy and the impoverished. The middle class is struggling to manage their EMIs. The MSME sector and the unorganised economy are in ruins. Counting the wealth of just a handful of affluent individuals does not represent the truth."
Commending the armed forces for their role in Operation Sindoor while condemning the Central government's "lack of leadership," Khera remarked: "I was disheartened when US President Donald Trump declared that a ceasefire agreement was negotiated between India and Pakistan."
Further elaborating, he stated: "The world has witnessed the strength of the Indian armed forces, but it has also observed the ineffective leadership of PM Modi. How was the ceasefire agreement reached? Why did Trump suddenly announce a ceasefire agreement while threatening to halt trade?"
Khera criticized the Modi-led administration for taking undue credit for advancements in defense, stating that former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru was instrumental in establishing the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) which laid the groundwork for the country's progress.
He made an analogy, saying: "If our great-grandfather hadn't built the foundation, how could a fifth floor have been constructed? If they claim to have accomplished everything independently, people will ridicule them."
Intensifying his critique, Khera noted, "On April 22, the day of the Pahalgam terror attack, Congress issued a statement supporting the government. Subsequently, two all-party meetings were convened, and Congress reiterated its position, yet PM Modi did not attend. It is the responsibility of the ruling party to foster political unity in the country, but PM Modi has failed in this regard."
