Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, 7 May 2026 marked the first anniversary of Operation Sindoor, honouring the Indian armed forces for their precision strike against terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) in retaliation for the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 innocent people. Modi described the operation as a "fitting reply" to those who dared to strike at civilians on Indian soil.

Modi's Message on the Anniversary

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Prime Minister Modi wrote: "A year ago, our armed forces displayed unparalleled courage, precision and resolve during Operation Sindoor. They gave a fitting response to those who dared to attack innocent Indians at Pahalgam. The entire nation salutes our forces for their valour."

In a second post, Modi said every Indian should take pride in the operation's outcome. "The extraordinary victory achieved by India in Operation Sindoor is an inspiring example of the remarkable valour and patriotism of our brave soldiers. Every citizen of the country takes pride in their indomitable courage, unwavering resolve, and dedication to duty," he added.

The Prime Minister also updated his display picture on X to an image bearing the words 'Operation Sindoor' alongside the Tricolour — a gesture echoed by several other political leaders.

What Operation Sindoor Entailed

Launched on 6 and 7 May last year, Operation Sindoor was a targeted military action by the Indian armed forces against high-value terror bases in Pakistan and PoK. Officials at the time described the strikes as "focused, measured and non-escalatory," aimed specifically at terror infrastructure rather than civilian or military installations.

Modi said the operation reflected India's "unwavering commitment" to national security. "It also highlighted the professionalism, preparedness and coordinated strength of our armed forces. At the same time, it showcased the growing jointness among our forces and underlined the strength that India's quest for self-reliance in the defence sector has brought to our national security," he said.

The Pahalgam Attack That Triggered the Operation

Operation Sindoor was carried out in direct response to the 22 April Pahalgam terror attack, one of the most brutal strikes on civilians in the Kashmir Valley in recent years. Pakistan-backed terrorists massacred 26 people, including 25 tourists and one local pony ride operator who reportedly tried to shield the visitors.

According to accounts from survivors and investigators, the attackers singled out victims based on religion, forcing individuals to recite the Islamic kalima to identify non-Muslims before opening fire. Several victims were newly married; many were shot at close range in front of their families.

Responsibility for the attack was claimed by The Resistance Front, an offshoot of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).

India's Broader Counter-Terror Stance

Marking the anniversary, Modi reaffirmed India's long-term posture. "Today, a year later, we remain as steadfast as ever in our resolve to defeat terrorism and destroy its enabling ecosystem," he said.

Officials have framed Operation Sindoor as a landmark demonstration of India's combined military and non-military strategic capability — one that successfully neutralised immediate threats, deterred further aggression, and reinforced India's stated zero-tolerance policy on cross-border terrorism while maintaining what the government calls "strategic restraint."

As India enters the second year since the operation, the anniversary is being observed as a moment of national reflection on both the human cost of the Pahalgam massacre and the military resolve that followed.
