PM Modi to Address the Nation Tonight Following Women’s Reservation Bill Defeat
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 18 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to address the nation tonight at 8:30 P.M., where he is expected to discuss the recent developments concerning the Women’s Reservation Bill.
Earlier today, after the Parliament session concluded, leaders from various parties convened a formal meeting with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. Prime Minister Modi also led an important session of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) in New Delhi, focusing on the protection of India's security and economic interests amid the rising tensions in West Asia.
This Cabinet meeting took place just a day after the Constitution Amendment Bill, which sought to implement women’s reservation in legislatures starting in 2029 and increase the Lok Sabha's strength, was rejected in the Lower House. The voting tally showed 298 members in favor of the Bill, while 230 opposed it. Of the 528 members who participated, the Bill needed 352 votes for approval.
The proposed legislation aimed to expand the number of Lok Sabha seats from the current 543 to a maximum of 850 to facilitate the women’s reservation law before the 2029 General Elections.
This expansion was intended to follow a delimitation based on the 2011 Census. Likewise, seats in state and Union Territory assemblies were also to be increased to ensure a 33 percent reservation for women.
Following the Bill’s defeat in the Lok Sabha, the BJP labeled the incident a 'black day' and accused Congress and other Opposition parties of failing women. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju stated that the Congress and the Opposition would face the backlash from women nationwide, claiming they had irreparably damaged their credibility.
On the other hand, the Congress and its allies insisted that the quota law passed in 2023 should be put into effect immediately, accusing the government of politicizing the matter. Several Opposition leaders, including Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, expressed that they were not against women’s reservation but opposed its connection with delimitation.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also claimed that the government’s true motive was to alter the constitutional framework and consolidate executive power. He noted that while the Congress had backed the Women’s Reservation Bill in 2023, the Centre’s decision to tie it to delimitation was unacceptable to the Opposition.
