PM Modi waits at Delhi Airport to avoid NEET-UG 2026 traffic disruption
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 21 June 2026 voluntarily held back at Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi to prevent his security convoy from disrupting traffic arrangements ahead of the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination, according to reports. The gesture, small in optics but significant in signal, came as more than 20 lakh students across India and abroad sat for the high-stakes medical entrance re-test.
What Happened at the Airport
Modi had returned from Kolkata, where he led the main event marking the 12th International Yoga Day. He landed at the airport at around 1:15 pm IST and was scheduled to proceed directly to his official residence. However, with the NEET-UG re-examination set to begin at 2 pm, the Prime Minister chose to wait at the airport rather than trigger a security-driven traffic freeze that could have delayed students en route to their examination centres. He departed only after the exam commenced.
NEET-UG Re-Exam: Scale and Security
The re-examination is being conducted under elaborate security arrangements, with candidates appearing at centres spread across the country and internationally. The re-test follows the alleged paper leak of the original NEET-UG exam on 3 May, which had drawn widespread protests and legal scrutiny. Several candidates who had gathered outside examination centres told reporters they remained sceptical about their preparation in the wake of the controversy.
What the Education Minister Said
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan addressed reporters ahead of the exam, expressing confidence in the re-examination process. 'Today, the re-examination is going to be held. I have full faith in the National Testing Agency (NTA), all state governments, district administrations, India's education system, and especially the students,' he said.
Pradhan added: 'Nearly 22 lakh students will soon sit for the NEET exam. Sit without fear, without worry. You will surely do well. My best wishes to all students. The students have faith in India's system; I hope this unwavering trust continues.' He also warned sternly against anyone attempting to 'play with the future' of India's younger generation.
CBSE Class 12 Re-Evaluation Results Pending
Pradhan separately noted that results of more than 15 lakh students who had applied for re-evaluation of their CBSE Class 12 board exam marks are ready and will be released shortly by the board. This adds another layer of student welfare concerns the government is currently managing simultaneously.
What Comes Next
With the re-exam now under way, attention will shift to the National Testing Agency (NTA) and its handling of results, given the trust deficit created by the earlier alleged leak. The government's credibility on examination integrity — and whether this re-test proceeds without incident — will be closely watched by students, parents, and the judiciary alike.
