A representative from the defense stated that following specific intelligence regarding drug smuggling in the Ngopa region of Saitual district, Assam Rifles personnel, assisted by state Police and the Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau (SIB), initiated a coordinated operation on Tuesday night.
During this operation, security forces intercepted a vehicle and conducted a thorough search, leading to the recovery of 3.518 kg of morphine, valued at approximately Rs 3.5 crore. The seized narcotics were being transported by two suspects identified as Kasim and Mukeem Ali.
The arrested individuals, along with the confiscated drugs and vehicle, were turned over to the police for further investigation and legal proceedings.
An official statement emphasized that this successful seizure highlights the Assam Rifles' steadfast dedication to eradicating smuggling and addressing the drug crisis in Mizoram.
Mizoram is exposed to cross-border smuggling due to its 510-km-long unfenced international border with Myanmar and a 318-km-long porous mountainous border with Bangladesh.
Myanmar’s Chin state serves as a primary conduit for the trafficking of narcotics, exotic wildlife, foreign-made goods, and other illegal items across six districts in Mizoram—Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Hnahthial, Saitual, and Serchhip.
Myanmar, sharing a 1,643-km-long unfenced border with four northeastern states—Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Nagaland, and Mizoram—acts as a significant transit point for drugs, especially heroin and methamphetamine.
On numerous occasions, Mizoram's Chief Minister Lalduhoma has called upon the youth and community members to avoid drugs and actively combat the escalating drug issue.
Last year, the Mizoram government executed a focused four-month operation from September to December 2025 to hinder drug smuggling from outside the state, particularly from Myanmar.
