Rewa, March 24 (NationPress) In a significant offensive against illicit narcotics, police successfully confiscated a substantial amount of prohibited Corex syrup in the Baikunthpur area of Madhya Pradesh's Rewa district during a late-night operation, as reported by officials on Monday.
Responding to a tip-off regarding the shipment in Baikunthpur, located roughly 35 km from Rewa's district center, the police initiated an operation, surrounding the identified delivery location.
While examining vehicles at a junction, officers spotted two luxury cars believed to be transporting the illegal substance. Upon seeing the police, the smugglers fled the scene, abandoning their vehicles.
A subsequent search of the vehicles led to the recovery of around 1,500 bottles of Corex syrup.
"In our relentless pursuit against illegal narcotics, we have confiscated a major shipment of prohibited Corex syrup in Baikunthpur," stated Rewa Superintendent of Police (SP) Anil Sonkar.
This seizure follows a recent attack on a police team by a gang involved in Corex smuggling in the Hanumana region, adjacent to Uttar Pradesh's Mirzapur district. The shipment was reportedly being transported from Banaras to Rewa via Hanumana.
Rewa district, bordered by Uttar Pradesh on several sides, has emerged as a hotspot for Corex smuggling activities.
Two months prior, Madhya Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Rajendra Shukla, a Rewa native, met with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to request collaboration from UP police in combatting smuggling operations.
"Illegal firearms, narcotics, and Corex syrup are routinely trafficked into Rewa from the UP border," remarked a senior police official.
This crackdown is a response to a recent mob assault on a police team in Mauganj, a district within the Rewa division, resulting in the fatalities of an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) and a civilian, prompting concerns over law enforcement in the area.
In reaction to the incident, the Madhya Pradesh government reassigned the Mauganj district collector and SP on Friday.
Numerous other senior police officials, including the Inspector General (IG) of the Rewa range, were also reassigned late Sunday night.
