Mauganj, March 22 (NationPress) A band of criminals launched an attack on a police squad using sticks and stones in Madhya Pradesh's Mauganj district on Saturday.

The confrontation took place under the jurisdiction of Hanumana police station, which is adjacent to Mirzapur (UP), as the police personnel were attempting to apprehend individuals connected to the distribution of the prohibited cough syrup Corex.

Following a tip-off about a significant shipment of the banned Corex syrup being transported in the Hanumana area of Mauganj, a team led by Anil Kokde, in-charge of the Hanumana police station, promptly proceeded to the location.

Upon arrival, they discovered a vehicle filled with more than a dozen boxes containing the illicit syrup.

The shipment was reportedly traveling from Banaras through Mirzapur to Rewa, according to police sources.

At that moment, a group of criminals associated with the Corex syrup smuggling operation confronted the police team, demanding their vehicle and an SUV.

Eventually, an additional police unit arrived at the scene, restoring order, and investigations into the incident are currently ongoing, as stated by the police.

This incident follows a tragic event two weeks prior, where Assistant Sub-Inspector Ramcharan Gautam lost his life during a mob assault while attempting to rescue local resident Sunny Dwivedi, who had been kidnapped in Gadra village, located in Mauganj district.

On March 15, five other officers sustained injuries from stone-throwing.

This matter was brought up during the ongoing session of the state Assembly, prompting the state administration to transfer Mauganj District Collector Ajay Shrivastava and SP Rasna Thakur.

The newly appointed Mauganj District Collector Sanjay Kumar Jain and SP Dilip Kumar Soni officially took their positions on Friday.
